Using second-hand nursery furniture can reduce costs, but make sure the product is safe.
What to look out for when considering second-hand nursery products or furniture:
- Are there full instructions for assembly and use?
- Is the product sturdy and stable?
- Do you have all the parts?
- Does the item work correctly?
- Are there any tears, sharp edges or sharp points?
- Have any changes been made that could make the item unsafe, such as rough, non-professional repairs?
- Is there any history of the item being in an accident or being damaged?
- Is there any paint chipped or coming off old cradles or bassinettes? Old paint could be lead-based, which could be harmful to baby.
Additional considerations for second-hand cots and portacots:
- All new and second-hand cots sold in Australia must meet the Australian Standard for cots or portacots. This should be noted in the instructions and is often on a label as well.
- Only use a firm flat, mattress that fits snugly (within 20 mm of sides and ends) in the cot.
- The mattress should be clean, flat, not tilted or elevated in any way.
- For portacots, make sure there are no rips or tears in the mesh and that the locking mechanisms work.
Check for product recalls:
- Some products may have been recalled as unsafe where children have been harmed or are likely to be harmed while using the product.
- You can check to see if a product has been recalled on the Product Safety Australia website.
Second hand furniture can be a great option! Just make sure it is safe to use.
